However, it wasn’t until the late 1800s and early 1900s that EVs began to attract attention. During this time, they were seen as a viable alternative to gasoline-powered cars, especially for city driving. In fact, by the turn of the 20th century, they accounted for around one-third of all vehicles on the road in the United States. With the rise of gasoline-powered cars, as well as the development of mass production techniques, EVs began to lose their prominence. By the 1920s, they had all but disappeared from the market.

Getting the Callback

It wasn’t until the 1970s, with the rise of environmentalism and concerns about air pollution, that interest began to resurface. Several prototypes were developed during this time, but none were able to gain widespread acceptance. It wasn’t until the 1990s that EVs began to make a comeback. The first modern EV, the GM EV1, was introduced in 1996. While the EV1 was only available for lease, it marked the beginning of a new era for electric vehicles. Since then, electric vehicles have continued to evolve and improve.

Removing the Barriers

Today, electric vehicles are available in a wide range of styles and sizes, from compact city cars to luxury SUVs. Advances in battery technology have made EVs more practical for everyday use across a variety of lifestyles. However, there are still several challenges that we must overcome before EVs can become truly mainstream. With time and investment, we look to fill the gaps in the presently insufficient charging infrastructure, especially in rural areas. In addition, we are looking towards a more cost-efficient mode of production to eliminate the high cost that remains a barrier for many consumers.

EVs offer a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional cars and offer a number of other benefits, including lower fuel costs, quieter operation, and reduced maintenance costs. Despite these challenges we face bringing EVs into the fold, the future looks bright. With advances in battery technology and continued investment in the growing infrastructure, electric vehicles are poised to become a more common sight on our roads in the years to come.
