Lexus has cared about the environment for years and has many examples. But the next step in the evolution of Lexus will bring a significant change in carbon emissions from the company’s vehicles. Hopefully, it will soon be zero.

A New Era

The Lexus RZ is not only a magnificent automobile but also a symbol of hope for the future of our planet. The “Z” in the name signifies “zero”. “Zero” carbon dioxide emissions per Lexus, and that’s what this luxury builder is aiming for. With the practical goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from Lexus vehicles to zero worldwide by 2035. Lexus has set an enormous, almost unreal goal but is putting its practical plans in motion to achieve it.

The unveiling of Lexus RZ’s first production model as the harbinger of hope took place at a digital online program in Plano, Texas, on April 20th, 2021. Although the pricing has not been officially revealed yet, the base price is estimated at around $55,000, according to Car and Driver.

BEVs, Battery-Electric Vehicles, contain no gas-engine parts. Lexus plans to convert all of its vehicles worldwide to BEVs by 2035. President of Lexus, Toyoda believes that “achieving carbon neutrality means realizing a world in which all people living on this planet continue to live happily.” To realize such a world, CO2 emissions must be reduced as much as possible and as quickly as possible.

Eco-Friendliness in the Past

Although it is now fashionable to appear environmentally friendly for marketing reasons, Lexus has long had a green track record. Many of Lexus’ plans, programs, and designs are aimed at not harming the environment or at least having as little impact as possible.

There are many other examples to prove this. For instance, Lexus has been using reusable or recyclable materials such as plant-based bioplastics for its vehicle components for years. In addition, Lexus has saved hundreds of thousands of pounds of material that ends up in landfills through special production processes. Lexus was also responsible for the world’s first luxury hybrid vehicle, the Lexus RX 400h, in 2005.

Does Eco-Friendliness Ruin the Fun?

As welcome as the news may be, a carbon-neutral future does not seem fun to many who hear it. That may be because people believe saving the planet must involve compromise. While that’s true in many areas, Lexus is doing its best to ensure that its vehicles maintain their environmental credentials while providing absolute driving pleasure.

Lexus is no stranger to fun driving experiences. The electric motors that equip some Lexus hybrid vehicles not only help with acceleration after stopping but also in other ways, such as improving handling. Lexus International President Koji Sato described Lexus’ future as “environmentally conscious, but straight-up fun to drive.”

As Lexus takes progressive steps toward a better future for the planet, it seems not only sensible but fun and exciting to join that journey.
