Lexus Racer Testing Positive Doesn’t Stop the Team from Staying Strong

The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship returned to Detroit after a two-year absence. The southern half of a city park on an island in the Detroit River was turned into a road course years ago. Since its transformation into a motorsports venue, it has had its thrills and spills over the years.

The Vasser Sullivan Lexus Motorsports team was ready for another “sprint” race on Belle Isle until some bad news came their way. The young racer Zach Veach tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and had to bow out of this race. In his place was Townsend Bell, Lexus brand ambassador and veteran driver on the IMSA circuit.

In qualifying, Bell’s teammate Frankie Montecalvo qualified second in GTD for the race. Aaron Telitz qualified fifth in what was going to be a serious battle in the class among the top five qualifiers.

After a tough hour and 40 minutes of racing, Adam Telitz and Jack Hawksworth found themselves in fifth place in GTD, with Bell and Montecalvo right behind them. However, a twist of fate came to the GTD class as an infraction was assessed by the class leader over a fueling stop violation. Therefore, both of the Lexus RC F GT3s moved up one position, giving the Vasser Sullivan Lexus Motorsports team two top 5 finishes in the class.

The next stop for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus Motorsports team will be in upstate New York at Watkins Glen for Sahlen’s Six Hours at The Glen. You can catch the race on the NBC Sports Network, Saturday, June 27 at 4:00 PM PT.
