From the west coast, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has turned to the East. More, South than East.
In the southernmost part of Virginia, an iconic motorsports venue lives. Virginia International Raceway is more than just a 3.27-mile challenge that throws elevations and a big tree at you. It is pure fun for the driver who is up for the challenge.
The Vasser Sullivan Lexus Racing team was looking for redemption in this final “sprint” race of 2021 – the penultimate race on the IMSA schedule. Again, the GTD class had been tough to run this season. VIR does not forgive anyone, but it will separate the crowd quickly.
The number 14 RC F GT3 of Adam Telitz and Jack Hawksworth, and the number 12 car of Frankie Montecalvo and Zach Veach wanted their shot at redemption in Southern Virginia. A bit of luck with a penalty levied on one of their rival teams. With that penalty, the number 14 car moved into the second qualifying place in its class. In a 15-car race, things just might get a bit interesting…
And they did. The number 14 car had to contend with the class leader and the rest of the pack. The result was clear – a podium finish for Telitz and Hawksworth! Coming in at third in the finish, the number 14 car proved once again that it will finish and place high on this highly respected track – or, any track it will command. Montecalvo and Veach’s number 12 car finished 13th, two laps behind the number 14 car.
The final stop on the 2021 season for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus Motorsports team will be at Road Atlanta for the Motul Petit Le Mans. The ten-hour endurance race will run on Saturday, November 13.
