Lexus Raced A “Two-Fer” At The Glen
Lexus Motorsports Comes Out a Winner in Sprint Race
The Vasser Sullivan Lexus Racing team was in a New York state of mind when they returned to Watkins Glen for the Sahlen’s six-hour race and the WeatherTech 240 – a two-fer on the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Challenge schedule. The RC F GT3 ran two races at one iconic venue within a week.
For the endurance race, each car returned to a three-driver format. The number 14 RC F GT3 added Kyle Kirkwood to the pair of Adam Telitz and Jack Hawksworth. Zach Veach returned to the number 12 car after his COVID-19 protocols expired. Veach drove with Frankie Montecalvo and Robert Megennis in the six-hour race at The Glen.
The Lexus teams did their best in the endurance race. The 14 car was in contention for the top spot on the class podium for five hours into the race. That was until a caution flag threw a wrench into the team’s plans in the final hour. In the end, Telitz, Kirkwood and Hawksworth would finish sixth, while the number 12 car finished 11th.
The following Friday gave the Vasser Sullivan cars another run at The Glen in the shorter two hour and forty minute “sprint” race. Montecvalvo and Veach returned in the number 12 RC F GT3, while Telitz and Hawksworth ran in the number 14 car.
In the shorter race, the Lexus RC F GT3s came home with a much different result. After starting on the wrong tires, the number 14 car regrouped to finish at the top of the class podium. Telitz and Hawksworth fought back as The Glen threw everything at them – including a red flag and damage resulting from contact with a LMP2 car. It was Vasser Sullivan’s and Lexus’ first win of the season in the GTD class.
The number 12 has its struggles early on. But, they clawed their way to second on the class podium thanks to a great effort by Montecalvo and Veach.
Next stop for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus Motorsports team will be at another iconic racecourse in the Northeast, Lime Rock in Connecticut for another “sprint” race. You can catch the race on the NBC Sports Network, Saturday July 17 at 2:30 PM PT.
