Lexus Presents Installation Plus Four Lexus Design Winners For Milano Design Week
For the 18th year in a row, Lexus of Las Vegas will present an immersive experience for those who attend Milan Design Week—an annual exhibition in Milan, Italy, showcasing the latest in furniture and design from countries around the world. This installation is called Shaped by Air and was created by acclaimed New York-based artist and architect Suchi Reddy, founder of Reddymade Architecture and Design. On view from April 17-23, guests will also have an opportunity to view prototypes from four winners of the 2023 Lexus Design Awards.
Shaped by Air was first shown at Miami’s Institute of Contemporary Art, during its Miami Art & Design Week 2022 where it celebrated Reddy’s and Lexus’ shared commitment to human-centered, carbon-neutral, as well as impeccably crafted design. Reddy has reimagined her vision for her ethereal installation in Milan. Shaped by Air is described as an immersive installation inviting visitors to discover Lexus’ Electrified Sport concept vehicle through a forest of its composite shapes. These shapes reflect its design as shaped by air, recalling the organic leaf-like shapes of Henri Matisse.
These shapes, which are comprised in part of post-consumer materials, first appear abstract, but as a viewer gets closer, they reveal themselves as an outline of the car. Reddy, whose design ethos has been described as a “form follows feeling” approach, has carefully calibrated the environment to be a welcoming, contemplative, and enveloping one; conveying a feeling of walking through a forest with accompanying sound and light effects.
Says Suchi Reddy: “Lexus’ continued commitment to innovation—and their support of an artistic approach as a confluence of art and design—led me to envision this immersive experience as both a sculpture and a multi-sensory spatial experience,”
Featured at this event, is an elevated lounge providing an area for rest and reflection. Besides the concept car, this provides another connection to Lexus as central to Lexus values is omotenashi—a concept encompassing both hospitality and mindfulness.
Alongside the Shaped by Air installation is a presentation of design prototypes by four LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2023 winners. For eleven years, this award has celebrated up-and-coming creative talent from across the globe. This year’s contest brief invited designers to submit concepts which anticipate a challenge of the future, address this challenge with an innovative solution, as well as captivate the imagination with exceptional design, while seamlessly enhancing happiness for all.
