What is Black History Month?

February is Black History Month across the US and Canada. It’s a celebration and recognition of the contributions of African Americans to our history, cultural and civic life. It goes back almost a hundred years to 1926 when Dr. Carter Woodson, a scholar, teacher, and civil rights activist who served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Howard University, set aside a week in February (because February is the birth month of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass) to raise awareness among young black Americans of the contributions of their ancestors, facts that were often left out of standard history books. He encouraged teachers to establish festivals, plays, concerts, speeches and other events to spread knowledge and appreciation of Black heritage. The celebrations spread and soon extended more than a week as African American pride in their past and present role in America grew. Finally, in 1976, the bicentennial year of America’s founding, President Ford officially recognized Dr. Woodson’s contributions and the importance of Black History Month, which was ultimately made official by an Act of Congress in 1986.

African Americans have a long and rich history of contributions to our economic, legal, civic and cultural life in the Las Vegas Valley and Southern Nevada, such as  Dr. Charles West who became our first Black medical doctor in the 1950s, and Mabel Haggard, first black school teacher and recipient of a Distinguished Nevadan Award in 1977, both active in promoting civil rights. There’s a full slate of Black History Month events planned for February in Clark County that reflect the amazing variety of contributions and influence of African Americans in Las Vegas. We encourage you to check some of them out.

We are proud to support the Springs Preserve celebration and recognize the importance of this key community here in Southern Nevada.  We hope to see you there!
